Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest certain rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
