Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
