Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
