Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers report they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then discovered numerous other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests indicate the substance was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are currently not aware of any injuries in connection with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities said they were working "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A senior official said the vandalism made him stunned and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the death of nine victims by a assailant aiming at residents of migrant background in 2020.
